Ian Lambert trained and then worked as a designer and maker of furniture, before moving into academia full-time in 1999. He has taught product design, sustainability, and design history in England, Scotland, China, and USA, and has supervised PhD students. He was a visiting lecturer at the Zhengzhou University of Light Industry from 2006 – 2017.
Ian has continued with his creative practice throughout his time in academia, and has published and exhibited work widely. His research interests are mainly in maker-led product design, redistributed (re)manufacture and sustainability, and he has recently completed a Carnegie funded research project on designing with ocean plastic.
Co-chair of the Research Through Design (RTD) conference 2017 in Edinburgh, Ian is a member of the RTD conference series steering panel. He has an MA degree from Central St Martins College of Art & Design, London, and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (Edinburgh College of Art). Ian is a full professor, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and an international ambassador for the Creative Conscience Awards.
