Freeman Lau Siu Hong

Born in Hong Kong in 1958, Freeman Lau was graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic, now the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, which is highly reputed for design. He started his career at SS Design & Production and became an Art Director in 1985. In 1988, he joined Kan Tai-keung Design & Associates Ltd. In 1996, Kan Tai-keung Design & Associates Ltd. was renamed as Kan & Lau Design Consultants. He has become the partner of the new company since then.

Since 1984, Freeman has won over 300 design awards which prove his international success. He develops his design profession in several fields, including book, graphic design, poster, and commercial product. In the field of book design, he won “Silver Award” in International Book Design Exhibition in Leipzig, Germany (1989). For graphic design, he won “Outstanding Graphic Designer—the Louis Cartier Award of Excellence” (1995), “Artist of the Year - Graphic Designer” (1997), and “Award of the Best Asia Graphic Design” in the 8th Asia Graphic Design Triennial (2012). Freeman has gained reputation worldwide in many poster design competitions. The awards include “Mayor of Nagahama Prize” in Japan Poster Grandprix (2000) and “Grand Prize” in International Biennial of Poster in Taipei (2000). In 2001, Freeman was invited to participate in Poster Design Competition of Beijing’s Bid for the 2008 Olympic Games. His poster was awarded “First Prize” and chosen to produce official promotional products. In the same year, the poster was awarded “Best Sport Poster” in Lahti Poster Biennale in Finland. In 2004, Freeman reached an important milestone by designing the Watson’s Water Bottle, which was later awarded the “International ‘Bottlewaterworld’ Design Award” (2004) and “Outstanding Greater China Design Award” by Hong Kong Communication Art Centre (2006). He created a model of symbiosis among art, culture, design and business acumen, which significantly increased the brand’s share of market. As creative talents from different sectors were invited to design iconic labels for the bottle, the designing of the bottle was regarded as a contribution to the local cultural movement. Moreover, these talents were known by many local citizens through daily products.

As his contribution to design is appreciated, he awarded “Gold Award” in New York Mercury Award (1993), “Golden Bee Award” in Moscow (2000), “Gold Award” by Hong Kong Designer Association (2005 and 2007), “Ten Outstanding Designers Award” (2005), “Lifelong Design and Art Achievement
