is an energetic and resourceful multidisciplinary designer. She likes to engage in all stages of a project but her most precious strength lies into her approach of multi-scale thinking bringing 2D and 3D vision together. Her ability to design in two and three dimensions brings strength and depth to the design proposals on which she collaborates. She manages to identify the founding elements of an intervention and put it into shape, texture, colors and words with audacity, precision and sensitivity. Under her expert eye, no opportunity is missed: she makes sure that all the details are considered and her overall vision allows her to transform any environment into a coherent and attractive entity. Graduated in graphic design, environmental design and event design, combines all disciplines within her practice. She is particularly sensitive to the user experience and the influence that each person can have on their environment. She is also interested in urban development issues at the local and international level. During her studies, she took part in various workshops in Europe and South America, which notably brought her to Brazil in 2015 during the preparations for the Rio Olympic games. She had the opportunity to collaborate with a study group at the Escola de arquitectura e urbanismo da UFF for a workshop on the future of the port territory of Niteroi. For her, these opportunities are particularly valuable in the conception of her vision and her role as a vector of good practice. At the end of her schooling, her career first began in the field of event design. The very short timeframe of the projects in which she participates quickly leads her to question the environmental challenges that this entails. The company where she works, Design par Judith Portier inc., is recognized as a key player in event design. They obtain a certification in sustainable development and become an EcoLeader company. They thus position themselves as agents of positive change and undertake to create projects that will leave a mark in the memory of the public but minimize the one left in the environment. After 10 years of practice, Myriam joined forces and co-founded Studio Overall with her two partners. The company specializes in sustainable space design and continues the mission previously begun in a spirit of collaboration and addition of specialties. Indeed, the three partners proudly embody the values of eco-design and make it a point of honor to support their customers in complete transparency in the implementation of their projects.
Festival d'été de Québec
Quebec is known for its many festivals that attract locals and tourists throughout the year. The Festival d'été de Québec (FEQ) was the first of these major events to see the light of day in 1968. It quickly carved out a place for itself as a cultural destination in the capital and a world-renowned festive icon thanks to its program featuring international stars. During the pandemic, the festival took the opportunity to completely review its graphic identity. This last edition was therefore a turnaround year that relaunched the festivities after two years of uncertainty and unveiled the new identity. My team was mandated to support the FEQ in the development of their new scenography but above all to set up an approach oriented towards eco-design. Indeed, the event field brings all kinds of issues because of its ephemeral nature. In the last years, I had the chance, as a creative director, to orient our mission towards making event design more sustainable. With a proven methodology based on in-depth analysis of existing equipment and materials, we act on two fronts. On one hand, we reuse and upgrade what still has potential and on the other hand, everything that is produced is tailor-made and designed to meet strict performance criteria defined in consultation with the customer. For the FEQ, the list was particularly exhaustive: safety in a public environment, durability of materials, ease of assembly and storage to optimize existing space, materials available locally, possibility of reusing certain structures on other events, etc. By accompanying the client at all stages of the reflection we establish a relationship of trust and we ensure that all the parameters are understood and implemented over the long term thanks to a detailed and spread-out plan. In 2022, it was decided to focus on three main interventions to establish the new identity and improve the experience of festival-goers. Main entrance arch: The composition is made from several sections of panels attached to lighting truss facilitating storage and assembly by technicians. The lighting is independent so that it is updated from one edition to another and create different atmospheres over the years. The icons are also independent panels, so they’re easily renewed and interchanged within the other arches on site. Signage structures: The large format display is the result of a study of several design approaches aimed at obtaining an adaptable module according to the context and the event where it would be deployed. For this reason, the header is independent of the main body to display the event’s name. A concrete base, usually used as a street barrier, offers flexibility in sourcing parts while ensuring the stability and safety of the structure. Giant logo: A major challenge given the curved shapes of the new FEQ logo. The adaptation included the printing of mesh strips making the logo’s counter form disappear and thus allowing to keep the same scaffolding structure that the festival had. Everything comes to life in the evening when animated projections dress the giant intervention.
